How Much Did David Bowie’s Art Collection Sell for at Sotheby’s?

Even in death, David Bowie is setting records. Two months ago, a majority of David Bowie’s art collection went up for auction in London at Sotheby’s, one of the world’s largest and most famous auction houses. Sotheby’s specializes in fine and decorative art, which made it the perfect auction house to handle the sale of David Bowie’s finest artwork. The final numbers from the three-part auction that started on November 10 were astounding.

The art collection sold for 24.3 million pounds ($30.5 million), which was more than double the high estimate Sotheby’s expected the collection to bring. Bowie’s design collection sold for an additional $ 10.8 million the day after. There were 47 lots in total, and 56 artists saw all-time highs in sales on their artwork. The collection that was sold at Sotheby’s represents about 65 percent of David Bowie’s complete collection. The rest of his collection will stay with his family and estate.

Here were some highlights of the collection up for auction that featured some of the best contemporary and modern art pieces in the world:

  • Jean-Michael Basquiat’s Air Power
  • Harold Gilman’s Interior
  • Peter Lanyon’s Trevalgan
  • Henry Moore’s Family Group
  • William Scott’s Girl Seated at a Table
  • David Bomberg’s Sunrise in the Mountains, Picos De Asturia’s
  • Frank Auerbach’s Head of Gerda Boehm
  • Marcel Duchamp’s With Hidden Noise

Jean-Michael Basquiat’s Air Power alone sold for 7,093,000 pounds ($8,817,308), making it the most expensive piece of the collection up for auction. Many other British artists and others exceeded estimates several times over. The auction event not only shone a light on the prestige of David Bowie’s art collection but the public desire to own a piece of art once purchased by Bowie himself. The late artist died on January 10th of this year.

Tips for Making Moving Easier

Tips for Making Moving Easier.

Moving to a new home can be a very exciting experience. It can be a time to reorganize rooms that have become cluttered and can allow you to have a fresh start. For some, moving can be a terrible experience. To make things easier, we’ve compiled some tips that we’ve learned over the years.

  1. Have an “essentials bag” for overnight

essentials bag

Chances are you’ll need something during the trip to your new house and you don’t want to be rummaging through boxes to get to something in an emergency. So, before you pack, think about things you might need in a hurry and put them in a bag so they can be easily accessible.

  1. Wrap fragile items and electronics in clothing

wrap fragile items

Unless you’re okay with paying a fortune for wrapping paper, just use clothing to wrap the stuff that might break. You’ll need to move your clothing as well so this is a way to move two birds with one stone.

  1. Label a box with its contents and the room it belongs in

Great way to stay organized in what can be a hectic time. If you know the room in which a box belongs, putting it there as you move in will make life much easier when it comes time to unpack.

  1. Take a photo of how your electronics are connected

wires connected

Getting the wiring correct and functional for your electronics is sometimes like a work of art and the easiest way to recreate the art is with a photo.

  1. Make your last grocery trip two weeks before moving

This will give you plenty of time to use up the food you buy and will prevent access waste you’ll have to throw out.
